on the 6 July 1988, a series of explosions ripped through the Piper Alpha platform, located in the North Sea. 

Fire engulfed the platform costing 167 men lives with many more injured and traumatised. 

This was the world’s biggest offshore oil disaster which affected 10% of UK oil production and led to financial losses estimated £2 billion (the equivalent of US$ 5 billion today).
