What happened on board the Carnival Triumph cruise ship in 2013?

On 10 February 2013 a small fire broke out in the engine room of the Carnival Triumph (now named Carnival Sunrise).

The fire disabled the ship’s heating, power, lighting and other services leaving 3,200 people stranded on board for five days.

 

How did the Carnival Triumph fire start?

The source of ignition is unknown. Fortunately the fire was automatically extinguished and there were no injuries to anyone on board.

 

What can the industry learn from the Carnival Triumph fire?

Investigation into the event discovered that the ship operators were aware of safety failing before the vessel set sail. The inquiry also confirmed that the ship’s suppression system was not working at the time of the fire.

33 passengers opted to sue the operators for higher levels of compensation than what was being offered.
