F.I.R.E. Consultancy is hiring for a Trainee Fire Engineer to support the business as it continues a period of substantial growth. This is an exciting opportunity to implement the principle of fire science to projects.

The salary for this role is negotiable depending on your experience. You can be based in either our Swansea or London office.

What will I be doing?

We’re looking for someone ambitious who’s willing to develop their capabilities and career with us. You’ll be;

  • Producing fire safety engineering reports
  • Supporting the team and working alongside other engineers
  • Reviewing design information such as drawings and documents
  • Ensuring work is compliant with client expectations and contractual obligations
  • Resolving fire engineering concerns by applying accepted principles, codes and standards

What will I be learning?

We’re passionate about training our staff to achieve their potential. Some of the tasks you’ll be learning and delivering on are;

  • Producing fire strategies
  • Risk assessments
  • Bespoke fire engineering (first principles)
  • Performance-based designs (supported by fire and evacuation modelling)
  • Risk analysis
  • Cost/benefit analysis as appropriate 

There’s a lot to learn, so the role will include a commitment to training programmes, plus the need to carry out site visits depending on our clients’ needs.

What skills/experience are you looking for?

Ideally you’ll hold a degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering/science related subject. If you don’t have a degree then a NEBOSH Fire Certificate is a good foundation to work from. 

A registration with a relevant institution, such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is also desirable.

As a trainee you’ll have the opportunity to learn and develop across all of the following, however experience and knowledge of any of the following would be advantageous;

  • Developing holistic fire safety strategies and performance designs
  • Implementing the principle of fire science to the built environment
  • Providing fire safety advice within regulated industries such as nuclear
  • Management of fire safety on construction sites
  • Interfacing with Fire and Rescue services (private and public)
  • Communicating and presenting design solutions to a wide audience of technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Knowledge of appropriate UK legislation, regulations and national and international standards
  • Understanding of the requirements of insurers and appropriate life/asset protection
  • Knowledge of the fire water network and fire water pumping systems such as water pumps, storage tanks etc
  • Knowledge of water spray systems for all applications
  • Knowledge of relevant analysis, design and specification software/techniques
  • Knowledge of hydraulic calculations for all water-based fire protection systems including sprinklers, water spray, fire pump sizing, fire water network analysis and foam systems
  • Experience of managing and motivating teams of technical specialists to deliver project commitments to programme and cost

Travel is involved in this role as you’ll be visiting sites, so a full UK driving licence is essential.
